Trusting the people is the thread that runs through Conservative history.
Modern technology enables us to ‘trust the people’ through each and every policy area. That is why transparency is at the heart of all of the progressive Conservative policies that have been announced and will continue to be announced over the coming weeks and months. That is why transparency has to be at the very heart of reform of public services and reform of Parliament.
People have every right to know how their money is being spent. We have every right to know how the public services that we rely on are performing. And technology means that people can be provided with sophisticated performance measures, rather than the crude measures of old.
There is also little doubt that transparency leads to enhanced performance. Numerous examples have shown that the more transparent performance figures are, the more likely that performance is to improve. Transparency puts the patient and the citizen at the heart of public service delivery. It uses modern technology to prove that ‘trusting the people’ is the most effective way of governing.
