Why is Sadiq Khan taking this decision?

I’ve just been listening to Radio 4′s PM, and a feature about Nottingham City Council being the first council to be ‘allowed by the government’ to charge a tax on work-place parking.

Let’s leave aside for a moment the rightness or wrongness of the tax itself. What on earth is central government doing getting involved in this? Once again, it’s a clear-cut case where, if local conditions require it, then local politicians should be able to introduce it – and take the electoral responsibility.

Part of the reasoning is that Nottingham has very good public transport into the centre.  I’ve only been to Nottingham once, so I don’t know… But what I do know is that central London generally and Parliament Square in particular has great public transport.

So will MPs be volunteering to pay tax on the vast car-parks under the Houses of Parliament?

Surely it’s just another form of congestion charge…?
