Let’s get repealing

Douglas Carswell has become one of my top thinkers on Conservative delivery.  Not so long ago, I suggested that in fact the first thing the next Conservative government should do is repeal.

Ask, and you shall receive.  Douglas has begun the Great Repeal Bill which will hopefully become the Great Repeal Act 2010.

I’m not as up on the detail of clauses of individual Acts as I might be – but most of those listed so far seem to me to be pretty sensible, and generally geared to getting the state out of people’s lives.

And on top of the general principle of less government, the fact that he is asking non-politicians to help identify the ‘bad’ laws is exactly what we need more of.  Remember how Tony Blair was so surprised in the 2005 election campaign that the 48-hour GP target was causing huge problems?  It’s the people who laws really affect who ought to be able to campaign for change.
