We don’t very often simply say ‘read this’ but that’s just what I’m going to do now.
Guido Fawkes has written a great piece on Tory strategy. I am so so pleased that this change has happened and hope that it stays the course (unlike last time the Conservatives promised the end of Punch and Judy politics).
People are (rightly) revolted by some of the antics of some politicians. They are horrified (rightly) at the way that some politicians are all take, take, take. They are horrified at the way that once an MP, some politicians seem to think they are too important to be polite, or to wait in a queue or to listen to others’ opinions.
They are put off by the mooing and point-scoring at PMQs and in debates. OK, parliamentary debates are probably not the most interesting things you could ever watch or read – but they’re important because they affect the way that we can live our lives. Politicians making smart-arse in-jokes, bellowing at each other and arguing just for the sake of it doesn’t make people trust them any more.
If MPs want to be taken seriously and respected and trusted to do the job we elect them to do, they need to behave in a way that earns back our trust. It will take someone of courage with serious leadership skills to make the leap in thinking that needs to be made – to simply announce that changes will be made, and not just trifling ones, but real changes that will prove that MPs are transparent and straight-forward where money (especially taxpayers’ money) is concerned, honest in and to their opinions and beliefs, and willing and able to represent their constituents’ views.
