We must not rest over the summer

None of us need to be reminded as to why it is vital that the Conservatives win the next election. But in order to make this a reality we must have the courage to continue on the course of change whilst also standing firm during these difficult times.

No-one said that it would be an easy time for the Conservatives and everyone knew that there would be a bounce for Labour once Brown became the PM. We only needed to look at 1990 to know that it would happen. But it is what happens after the change of PM that is the key. Labour will do just as we did.

In its early days, Major’s Government tried to show how it was a break from the past, and fresh, announcing new Government initiatives, but eventually Labour’s determination totally overcame ours; we sat back and despondency and elements of arrogance set in. The rest is history.

So now we must look to the future and set out our action plan for summer. In the upcoming weeks things will begin to steady but for us to take the lead again we must reignite the same zeal for change and hunger to serve that we previously had.

Over the summer months we must stand true to the modern compassionate Conservativism that David Cameron has set out since he was elected Leader. We must show the country that we as a Party have changed, modernised and broadened our appeal but we must also raise the stakes and not shudder away from the fact that we must do more. Platform10 can play a great part in making this happen.

And just as this campaign continues, our message to the country as a whole must gain pace too. The Policy Group reports have laid some amazing foundations and forwarded some fresh proposals. In the run up to Conference, we can continue to set out why it is only the Conservatives that can be trusted with the NHS whilst adding fervour to our recent campaigns on national security, global poverty and fixing our broken society.

We can win but we must hold our nerve and have the courage to make it happen.
