Apparently, the Scottish Tories have joined up with Labour and the Lib Dems to urge Alex Salmond not to hold a referendum on Scottish independence. Quite apart from allowing Salmond the freedom to do his favourite ‘I am the underdog who stands up for Scotland against the nasty English’ act, this is totally inconsistent with our support for a referendum on the EU treaty.
And – if we’re confident of the arguments for the Union, then why be afraid? Holding a referendum now on independence for Scotland would answer the question for a generation (as it did last time).
I agree with Michael Forsyth – hold it and campaign for what we believe in.
