Cycling Revolution for Britain?

I started cycling to work a few weeks ago and am addicted! The exercise is fantastic and I arrive at work feeling fresh and happy. The contrast to the tube, especially in summer, could not be greater.

There is still so much more we can do to help people to cycle. Encouraging employers to fit showering facilities at work (with tax breaks if necessary), scrapping VAT on bikes, and better cycle lanes would all help. But an article in yesterday’s Guardian about a cheap bike scheme in Paris really got me thinking.

By the end of the year there will be over 20,000 bikes at 1452 electronic bike stations across Paris. Buy your €1 access pass and your bikes will be free for 30 mins. You can pay €29 for a full year. The company earns most of its revenue through advertising.

Just think for a moment how such a scheme could revolutionise London and hopefully the whole of Britain. Green and healthy transport for next to nothing. Our politicians need to seize this opportunity – and a true Londoncyclist called Boris should be the first.
